Dueling Ideas: From Cultural Polemics to Contextual Literature

by Ken Jenie

Polemic is one of the models of collective literary criticism. A number of important events must be noted down amongst the themes of identity and ontology: Cultural Polemics (1930s) debating the orientation of Indonesian culture; Surat Kepercayaan Gelanggang vs. Mukadimah Lekra (Gelanggang Testaments vs. Lekra Preamble, 1950s); Lekra vs. Manifes Kebudayaan (Lekra vs. Cultural Manifests, 1960s); Kritik Sastra Aliran Rawamangun vs. Ganzheit (Rawamangun School of Literary Criticism vs. Ganzheit, 1970s); Contextual Literature discourses (1980s); Revitalisasi Sastra Pedalaman (Revitalization of Literature from the Hinterland, 1990s) rising up against the arrogance of Jakarta.

This lecture is conducted in Indonesian.
