Legenda Zaman Kita: 90 Tahun Ali Audah [The Legend of Our Time: 90 Years of Ali Audah]

Ali Audah is one of just a small number of Indonesian literary figures to work as translator of Arabic works. Despite never going further than Madrasah Ibtidaiyah and Sekolah Rakyat, Ali Audah is widely regarded as a brilliant translator. Several of his translation works are Suasana Bergema by A. Hamid G. As-Sahar, Membangun Kembali Pemikiran Agama Islam by Muhammad Iqbal (with Taufiq Ismail and Goenawan Mohamad), Sejarah Hidup Muhammad by Muhammad Husain Haekal and Lorong Midaq by Naguib Mahfouz.

Ali Audah also helped found Himpunan Penerjemah Indonesia (HPI, Association of Indonesian Translators). Thanks to his commitment and integrity in the field of literature and translation, he was awarded Anugrah Rumah Puisi in 2011.

This July, Ali Audah will be 90 years old. To celebrate his birthday and his great contribution to translation in Indonesia, PDS HB Jassin together with HPI and Komunitas Salihara have organized the launch of Legenda Zaman Kita: 90 Tahun Ali Audah. The book features views from literary figures, Muslim scholars, and translators in Indonesia as they regard the person, Ali Audah. Goenawan Mohamad will give a talk about this eminent literary figure and translator.
