Things We Like: Dari Minggu Ketiga Juli

Film, series hingga musik yang kami sukai.

by Ghina Sabrina

Di edisi terbaru “Things We Like”, kami mengumpulkan hal-hal yang sedang disukai oleh tim Whiteboard Journal berikut alasannya. Dari film rom-com bertema cross-cultural love, film cult-classic bergenre horror, Instagram meme page dengan pesan-pesan penuh referensi teori akademis, seri Youtube yang dipenuhi dengan dad jokes hingga suplemen kekebalan tubuh, berikut adalah “Things We Like” dari minggu ketiga Juli.

What:
Charles Mingus – The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (Impulse! 1963)

Description:
Charles Mingus is one of the 20th century’s greatest composer, and you can hear why on this Impulse! Records 1963 release. A brilliant 6 movement composition feels like a story that takes you through a variety of emotions. Listening to it from beginning to end with a nice set of speakers or headphones is a beautiful experience I highly recommend you doing at least once in your life.

What:
The Big Sick

Description:

What:
Holger Czukay – On the Way to the Peak of Normal

Description:
On loop almost whenever I commute and before sleep. Favorite track is “Ode to Perfume” for it exudes sensuality and suspense at the same time.

What:
@ripannanicolesmith

Description:
Memes are definitely funny, but where else could I find hilarious niche memes with academic references to theories by Lacan, Zizek, or Foucault? Where one with Paris Hilton on it would talk about reclaiming identity through strategic essentialism, while also breaking the notion of high and low culture? There are layers on these memes yo.

What:
Imboost Force

Description:
Tetapi, thanks to Imboost Force, badan rasanya nggak terlalu lemas, bisa konsentrasi and go about my day like usual. Thanks Imboost Force!

What:
Akun Instagram Jay Versace

Description:
Terdengar cukup aneh bukan, but what is normal anyway?

What:
ALL DEF – Dad Jokes

Description:
Ok terus terang, ini super nagih banget. Receh versi Amerika, shit doesn’t get better. Gotta love ‘em Dad Jokes.

What:
Dissect, a serialized music podcast

Description:
Imagine rap Genius, but nerdier. Host/rap scholar Cole Cuchna diligently delves into modern hip-hop classics and investigates the influences, references and conceptual relationships in the albums, one song at a time.

The first season starts with Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly”, an intricate web of analogies and samples which Cuchna untangles soberly and rigorously. I’m only halfway through the first season (The second and third season dives into Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark and Twisted Fantasy” and Frank Ocean’s “Blonde”) because there’s so much info loaded in each episode, but just listen to the first episode where Cuchna breaks down the framework of Kendrick’s previous album “good kid, m.A.A.d City” and join me in raising both hands in mad respect for K.Dot and for this podcast.

What:
The Real GeBiz

Description:
An anonymous graphic designer group in Singapore is currently busy doing a logo-makeover project for the government logo. It is interesting and funny at the same time to see how they create a new form of ‘better’ logo just by redecorating and readjusting the official logo composition without changing the whole concept. Don’t you think we need this kind of instagram account in Indonesia?

What:
@darkstockphotos

Description:
If you have a twisted or fucked-up sense of humor and also happened to be a graphic designer, chances are, you’ll find this account amusing. Or if you are the goody-two-shoes type, you’ll get repulsed. Maybe.

We, morbid graphic designers, have @darkstockphotos to thank nevertheless for revealing these cheeky, satire gems amidst myriad of cheesy-ass, cookie-cutter stock images we are too familiar with during research. What a nice twist to see it’s all deliberately curated to entertain or offend us — I’d say let’s embrace both. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What:
The life-changing magic of not giving a f*ck by Sarah Knight

Description:

What:
Pusha T’s Wedding

Description:
Last Saturday, Pusha T married his longtime girlfriend, Virginia Williams in a stunning and intimate ceremony in his hometown Virginia Beach. King Pusha himself looked incredibly dreamy in a Dior custom-made cream jacket and black tuxedo pants designed by Kim Jones. And last but not least, the happy couple walked into their wedding reception to Kid See Ghosts’ “Feel the Love” <3

What:
Family Feud: Blind Date Episode

Description:

MAR GALO
BAMBOO TWIST

What:
Rosemary’s Baby

Description:
Hailed as the biggest influence, or some would say, rip-off for recent horror hits, Hereditary, Rosemary’s Baby is one of Roman Polanski’s masterpieces. A true psychological horror that has zero ghost/creature/jump scare. This cult (pun intended) classic also inspired Jordan Peele’s Get Out. Creepy neighbours, gothic NYC building, weird coincidences, narcissistic husband, things are not going well in the new hood for Rosemary. Oh, and that nightmare nursery tunes is also quite unforgettable. Watch it on Netflix.  whiteboardjournal, logo
