Mondo Gascaro – Saturday Lights

It was an unfamiliar sight of the Santa Market (Pasar Santa) as we went up its rusty stairs to find Mondo’s listening party on the top floor. For this night, what used to be the sound of traders bantering amongst each other was replaced with the sound of Mondo’s guests talking to one another and records playing in the background. With just a few of its stalls open including two record stores and a coffee shop, it sets the right mood for the listening party.

After everyone gathered to listen to Mondo’s new single “Saturday Night”, we found a quiet place to chat with the man himself in the dark hallways of the market.

“Saturday is a day of celebration, Sunday is a day for rest. It’s a romantic song, and it is more about the celebration of life and romanticism,” said Mondo, explaining the inspiration behind his new single Saturday Light. “ I imagine it’s Saturday evening, I see my self standing on top of a hill, looking at the ocean, feeling the wind against my body”.

Mondo has always been known for someone who is more involved behind the scene. His works includes producing albums for artists such as Payung Teduh, Ayushita and Noh Salleh. Now after his two-year hiatus, he is ready to take on his new project with Ivy League Music.

“I still involve a lot of people in this, but the brainstorming process is very different,” explained Mondo, “I have to take all responsibilities and I am the decision maker from the beginning to the end”.

Friday was also Mondo’s birthday, a fine way to celebrate with his friends and fans alike.

Saturday Light is just a teaser of what’s coming. The album is planned to be released early next year, however, Saturday Light is available for listening online and soon on a 7-inch vinyl.
