‘In the footsteps of Erasmus’ by Jeroen Hermkens.

Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466-1536), scholar and philosopher, advocated freedom of speech and respect for others. He wanted to learn from the standpoints of others. He travelled all over Europe and worked in various cities. Artist Jeroen Hermkens tells Erasmus’ life story by depicting the cities that have been crucial for his work. Hermkens has selected the following cities: Rotterdam, Gouda, Deventer, Paris, Oxford, Leuven, Venice, Freiburg and Basel. In his mural, he follows Erasmus all over present-day Europe, where the ideas of his great mind are still noticeable.
