Dialogue of Photography and Literature: Banal Aesthetics and Critical Spiritualism

by Muhammad Hilmi

This event will discuss three books: On Street Photography and Street, Rain & Style by Erik Prasetya, and Simple Miracles, the first book from the Critical Spiritualism series by Ayu Utami. As life partners, Erik and Ayu have been influencing each other and found meeting points in the two perspectives of each field. In the end, banal aesthetics and critical spiritualism offer a way for people to be open through art.

On Street Photography is an introduction to the technical approaches, problems as well as ethical and aesthetic stances of street photography. Street, Rain & Style is a photographic record of Jakarta. These two photo books carry the concept of banal aesthetics. Meanwhile, “critical spiritualism” was first mentioned by Ayu in her novel Bilangan Fu (2008) and will continue to be explored in her next works.
