Pada “Things We Like” kali ini, kami meng-highlight ragam aktivitas favorit semasa berdiam di rumah. Dengan banyaknya waktu yang kita habiskan di dalam rumah, besar kemungkinan kalau kita membaca satu-dua hal setiap harinya. Oleh karena itu, kami mengumpulkan sederet bacaan yang disukai. Dari webzine Wastedrockers, bagian editorial dari SSENSE, hingga buku fiksi karya Lily King, berikut adalah beberapa pilihan kami.

Wastedrockers

Description:

Belakangan, musik dari skena independen berkembang pesat, menelan mentah major label yang dulu dominan. Membuat anak-anak indie yang dulu adalah David menjadi Goliath-Goliath baru di gemerlap industri musik kita. Sayangnya di antara gemerlap ini, ada nama yang sering sekali terlupakan, padahal namanya perlu kita cetak tebal di perjalanan musik kita dari masa ke masa: wastedrockers. Berdiri sejak tahun 2003, wastedrockers terus konsisten menulis/memberitakan musik kita hingga kini. Entah sudah berapa banyak band lokal keren tumbuh dan berkembang dari webzine ini. Sampai sekarang masih sulit mencari pembanding penulis musik dengan pemahaman akan genre dan glossary band selengkap Dede, motor utama proyek ini. Saat media musik tumbuh dan mati seumuran laron, wastedrockers terus berjalan dengan usaha mandiri. Bahkan Pitchfork pun tak bisa seperti ini.

SSENSE’S Editorial Page

Description:

I’m always a sucker for good fashion editorial stories, and for me SSENSE ticks all the boxes. The topics they covered thread along different, sometimes way too contrasting, areas of interest. They would publish a longform on one specific fashion item, then an interview with fashion’s Greatest, sometimes on the latest trends, reflection on the most random things, and the list goes on. Reading it is like meeting the coolest (and smartest) person in the room. It always amazes me how versatile the editorial section of this e-commerce website is and I would like to know how they run on a daily basis.

Description:

Actually ini bacaan yang agak lama, tapi entah kenapa jadi nyantol dan relevan buat dibaca ulang dari awal sampai kelar. Sebuah tulisan yang sangat convincing untuk diresapi dan ditelaah, terasa begitu riil dengan struktur argumen yang sahih. Melalui kacamata seorang eks-penegak hukum, kita diajak untuk melihat lagi lebih dekat seperti apa sesungguhnya momok dari “abuse of power”.

Euphoria by Lily King

Description:

Truth be told, during WFH, I’ve been finding it *so* hard to commit my diminishing attention span to watch a new TV series, or a movie, let alone read a book with WORDS. This novel, however, I gobbled up like a packet of takeaway nasi padang: hungrily, unrelentingly, sensually.

The story came as a timely piece of escapism. Set in the harsh lands of New Guinea at the turn of the century, we follow the lives of a trio of Western field anthropologists studying the fictional indigenous tribes. I finished the book in one day, captivated by the way Lily King wrote not only about the emotional turbulence between the colorful cast of characters, but also the way she uncovers how your life’s work is intricately tied with your passion and greed and tenacity–especially when you’re working seven hours deep in a tropical rainforest. 

King loosely based the characters on real-life scientists Margaret Mead and two of her husbands. I don’t think I can ever be a field anthropologist (because I will die), but this book shines a light on how this field of study can be equally soul-crushing and life-affirming.
