Architecture in Indonesia

by Muhammad Hilmi

This Lecture will review the architecture development in Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period, Soekarno’s period and the present. In Han Awal’s architectural point of view, the concept of architecture cannot be separated with the history of human development. Which means that architecture is related to other disciplines, such as sociology and archeology. Han Awal also argues that the concept of architecture in the Archipelago displays variety and the idea of unity in diversity.

Han Awal’s works are, among others, Atma Jaya Catholic University’s campus and the parliament building in Jakarta. Besides being known as an architect, Han Awal is also dubbed as a conservation architect because of his tenacity in preserving old historical buildings, such as the National Archive building, Cathedral Church, Bank Indonesia, and at the moment he is renovating the Immanuel church in Gambir and the Bank Indonesia’s office building in Surakarta.
