Gimme 5: Ben Ungermann’s Favorite Ice Cream Flavors

From Salted Caramel Bacon and Pecan to Vanilla ice cream.

by Ghina Sabrina

As a runner-up of MasterChef Australia 2017, Ben Ungermann was best known for his desserts, specifically his unique ice cream concoctions and flavors. Dubbed as the “Ice Cream King” by his fans, it was little known that before MasterChef, he had never made a dessert before and that it was his weakest point. Well, practice makes perfect and now he’s constantly experimenting with different natural ingredients for his ice cream flavors – be it sweet or savory. Just recently, he has opened his own ice cream parlour, Ungermann Brothers in Australia, and with this in mind, we asked Ben to tell us his top 5 ice cream flavors of his creation.

Salted Caramel Bacon and Pecan

I love that one because it’s savory and the boys, they really like that one. That’s the one the guys like the most.

Lavender and Honeycomb

I think when lavender is used in the right amount it’s really beautiful and floral, and when it’s paired with something like honeycomb, it’s a match made in heaven.

Vanilla

It’s for the traditionalist. I actually think that sometimes, I do all these crazy flavors, but you just really can’t get past a really good vanilla ice cream.

Carrot Cake

I do a carrot cake ice cream and that’s been a really big hit. It’s crazy because the ice cream itself almost replicates the butter frosting that goes on top of the carrot cake. So we made a carrot ice cream, and we followed through with a carrot cake, and it honestly tasted exactly like it. Coffee and Cardamom

It’s also one of my biggest seller and I really love that flavor. Coffee is a really strong flavor, but so is cardamom, so when you put them together it just works perfectly. whiteboardjournal, logo
