Come Here Cambo

by Ken Jenie

My love affair with Cambodian music started by listening to Dengue Fever many moons ago. Through them, I was introduced to the wonderful world of Cambodian psychedelic rock, pop, and folk that was flourishing before the Khmer Rouge. Sinn Sisamouth and Ros Sereysothea are two of the most prominent and prolific artists of their time along with Pan Ron, Houy Meas, and other artists that made it into this compilation. Sadly, most, if not all, of these talented musicians disappeared during the reign of Khmer Rouge. Such a tremendous loss for the country’s most treasured talents. Come Here Cambo serves as a homage to the eclectic Cambodian sound in the 60’s and 70’s, in addition to Dengue Fever rounding off the selection by covering Genjer Genjer, a controversial Indonesian song relating to communism back in the days.
