The Restaurant of Many Orders

by Ken Jenie

This dance-theater performance is a new interpretation on The Restaurant of Many Orders, a novel by Kenji Miyazawa. It asked the question “what is human” and “how are we supposed to make a connection with nature”. If the original work is focused on two storm-tossed hunters lost in the jungle encountering a restaurant in the middle of the jungle, this dance-theater performance shifts the focus onto the giant wild cat that owns the restaurant. It is a time when animals hold more power than humans, and humans take the role of prey. Although this circus performance is categorized as tragicomedy, it gives greater portion to comedy. This performance is a physical theater that combines contemporary dance, Balinese dance, various vocalizations, and other exhilarating acts.
