Seniman kontemporer asal Cina, Ai Weiwei, telah kembali menjadi sorotan setelah mengumumkan karya terbarunya, “Safety Jackets Zipped the Other Way”. Dikenal dengan penggunaan material dan teknik yang tidak konvensional, kali ini ini Ai Weiwei berkolaborasi dengan DIY shop asal Jerman bernama Hornbach. Jika sebelumnya Ai Weiwei pernah membuahkan karya yang terbuat dari 14.000 jaket pelampung ataupun serpihan dari bangunan studionya di Beijing yang telah diratakan, kali ini ia menggunakan bahan-bahan yang kerap ditemukan dalam proses pembangunan. Mulai dari jaket pekerja konstruksi sampai materi dan alat konstruksi standar seperti pengait dinding. Ai Weiwei pun melengkapi “Safety Jackets Zipped the Other Way” dengan instruksi manual yang berfungsi ganda sebagai artist book. 

Dibuat dari materi-materi yang disediakan oleh Hornbach, Ai Weiwei juga telah membuat karya ini lebih aksesibel secara fisik. Lain dari instalasi ruang publik di kota tertentu maupun instalasi yang dipajang di museum-museum terpilih, “Safety Jackets Zipped the Other Way” ini dapat diakses melalui pembelian online. Dengan memesan karya ini, siapapun bisa merakit dan memajang material-material yang disediakan dengan sesuka hati. Dengan ini, Ai Weiwei berharap bahwa kelak industri kesenian juga dapat membuka pintunya dengan lebar dan menjadikan ruangnya lebih inklusif.

Dalam video yang diunggah di akun Instagram resminya, Ai Weiwei pun menuturkan bahwa karya ini lahir dari pemikiran bahwa seni adalah sesuatu yang demokratis. Maka dari itu Ai Weiwei dengan sengaja memberi “Safety Jackets Zipped the Other Way” makna yang direct dan sederhana sehingga ada ruang kebebasan interpretasi. Menurutnya, aksesibilitas suatu karya seharusnya tidak terbatas pada kaum yang fasih dalam bahasa seni saja, seperti kurator atau pun orang-orang yang gemar mengunjungi museum. Namun, seni harus menjadi sesuatu yang ramah dan bisa dinikmati serta dimengerti oleh masyarakat yang awam juga.

”Safety Jackets Zipped the Other Way” is a set of hi-vis safety jackets zipped together to form a connected, non-functional soft sculpture. I try to relate my works to everyday life, to ordinary things, to the familiar. At the same time, I add some twists to make us question our rationality. Simply zipping a jacket in a reverse fashion with another jacket destroys the original meaning and functionality. You can combine two jackets for a simple one, or as many jackets as you want. The language is the same. The connected jackets can then be installed using either a standing or hanging method. HORNBACH is a business that relates to the everyday lives of people. I have always liked stores that serve a clear function or have a practical purpose. When I was living in New York in the 1980s, I always frequented these kinds of places. I used to say that there are two types of stores one should visit—book shops and DIY stores. One serves the activity of the brain and the other provides the tools with which to make things happen. I made this work for the public, for the people who are not necessarily art collectors or museum-goers. This is for those who have a sense of humor and understand that meaning can be created by anybody at any moment. You do not have to have a profound education to understand art. I hope that ordinary people can enjoy this work and not spend too much money, while being able to say, “I have this original work by Ai Weiwei.” It will be perfectly made, which is not to my credit but to the designers and factories that produced these materials. What I am providing is the possibility. Art belongs to everybody. Everybody can be an artist or has the possibility or ability to make art.
