Mahabharata

by Muhammad Hilmi

The life story of Bharata family as summed up in the Mahabharata epic is the source of o philosophy of life, morals, politics, and law. The original work is written in Sanskrit and it is part of the Hindu doctrine that later inspired the oral tradition, modern literature and performing arts in Asia and the rest of the world.

In the spirit of finding novelty, Hiroshi Koike presents the epic in the form of physical theater. The dancers will perform various characters in different Balinese masks. The story will flow not only through the dancers’ movements, but also the abbreviated story that will be projected onto the screen.

This performance is a collaborative project of artists Japan, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The “First Chapter” of Mahabharata has been performed in 2013. This year’s performance will present the “Second Chapter.”
