Pada “Things We Like” kali ini, kami kembali meng-highlight salah satu aktivitas favorit semasa work from home, yaitu mendengarkan musik. Oleh karena itu, kami mengumpulkan sederet rilisan baru maupun lama yang menjadi pilihan tim Whiteboard Journal. Dari soundtrack film “Princess Mononoke”, EP yang dirilis 11 tahun lalu, hingga album yang merespon situasi terkait gerakan Black Lives Matter, berikut adalah beberapa pilihan kami.

Lipstik Lipsing – Room for Outside

Description:

Banyak banget lagu/album bagus rilis belakangan. Ada album Bibio yang membuat kita menjelajah semenanjung Balkan dari rumah, Owen rilis album, Run The Jewel rilis album bombastis, album kedua Phoebe Bridgers (biar Ghina aja yang nulis tentang ini), juga album Christian Lee Hutson yang berkualitas (diproduseri oleh mbak Phoebe juga). 

Di lokal pun demikian, ada single baru dari Suar yang bikin kangen sama Pure Saturday, pula single dari DOM 65 yang membahas isu kesehatan mental dari kacamata punk dengan paripurna.

Tapi di antara semua itu, kita perlu mensyukuri dirilisnya EP dari band urban legend Semarang, Lipstik Lipsing di Spotify. EP ini cuma berisi enam lagu, dan sebenarnya telah dirilis sejak 2009, tapi kualitasnya tak lekang zaman. Dulu ketika pertama kali dengar, merasa bahwa semua nada-nada indah telah mereka curi dan kumpulkan jadi satu di sini. Mendengar album ini satu dekade kemudian, tidak mengubah penilaian itu. Jika ada kompilasi indie/dreampop lokal terbaik, album ini wajib ada di sana.

Sondre Lerche – Patience

Description:

Gue udah lama ngikutin Sondre Lerche. Jadi zaman dia masih jazz, bossa nova, dan berlirik romantis sampai sekarang lebih ke indie pop yang lebih “noisy” dengan lirik reflektif di beberapa album terakhirnya. Album ini menurut gue, somewhat, adalah gabungan dari ciri khas dia yang dulu dengan yang baru. Secara sound terdengar lebih minimalis dari beberapa album dia yang terakhir, di beberapa track bisa terdengar juga sound gitar dia yang khas, mirip single “Heartbeat Radio”. Tapi, tetep terdengar fresh karena kayanya di album ini Sondre kayanya lebih eksplor vokal dia lagi. Track favorit gue adalah “Are We Alone Now”. Melodinya catchy banget dan pas buat didengerin sambil kerja. By the way, dia juga sempet bawain semua lagu di album ini secara live dan bisa ditonton di Youtube. It’s so good by the way, nonton deh!

Phoebe Bridgers – Punisher

Description:

It might be 3 years since “Stranger in the Alps”, and I’ve been crying/feeling numb to the same melodies over and over but here we are, “Punisher” is finally out (and a day early!!!). 

With 11 songs on the album, her songwriting is still as casual and dark as you know her to be. On one song she writes about both her hatred towards jogging and also wanting to believe in God (“Chinese Satellite”), it’s so specific yet so broad that you’d reevaluate your whole understanding of the song just because you thought she’s fucking with you. 

To top it off, its last song “I Know The End” is metalinguistic in itself. Just like her decision to release her album a day early because of the current socio-political climate, she’d also resigned to the fact that the world has gone absolute batshit crazy and maybe it’s time for us to take off. Truly the soundtrack of the apocalypse.

Joe Hisaishi – Princess Mononoke OST

Description:

Seharusnya bisa milih Punisher, tapi jujur belum siap dengerin because my heart is not ready. And with the state of the world, I’ve been trying to get in touch with my inner child to help calm my nerves. What better way to do that than with a Ghibli marathon? Sedikit cerita, dulu pas kecil gue lupa nonton “Kiki’s Delivery Service” atau “Spirited Away”, tapi ada jalan cerita yang sedih and I was a sensitive kid (still am), gue nangis kejer banget dan trauma nonton sampe gede. 

So I’ve just recently reacquainted myself with studio Ghibli. I started the marathon with “Howl’s Moving Castle”, fell in love with the visuals and music, and the journey started there. Besoknya gue nonton “Whisper of The Heart”, heard the Japanese version “Country Roads” and cried of cuteness. Last night I watched “Princess Mononoke” for the first time (cried again) and was completely in awe of how complex and relevant the story is 20+ years later (and this is all in a children’s movie!!!!). That shit was HEARTBREAKING. If not for the story, the soundtrack would’ve got me…. ”Ashitaka & San” brought tears to my eyes. Can Joe Hisaishi compose the score to my life please?  Best Escort girls.

Lately, lagi sering bangetttt dengerin lagu ini. Dan rada takut bakal cepet bosen kalo keseringan disetel lol,  but i just can’t stop listening to this track! Lagunya nyantai-nyantai, ngawang gitu, tapi beat-nya juga pas jadi ga bikin ngantuk. Enak banget buat didengerin pas lagi kerja atau untuk cooling-down abis lari pagi.

Pogo

Description:

Beberapa minggu terakhir yang cukup aneh dan padat oleh kerjaan, aku ditemani oleh lagu-lagu Pogo. Sebenernya udah lama tau Pogo, jauh dari 2008 dia adalah salah satu hidden gems-nya Youtube. Lagu-lagunya sangat jauh di masa depan dari saat itu (is that the correct translation for “way ahead of its time?) Pogos music belong to the plunderphonics and electronic genre. And the pioneer in “aesthetic” music. It’s weirdly calming, and put you in a state of trance (at least for me). It’s like your brain is floating in space, drifting away, endlessly, while the brain is still conscious about the surrounding. I’ll link to his most iconic video on youtube below. Do give it a try!

Description:

Speaker Music alias DeForrest Brown Jr. merilis album ini dalam rangka merespon situasi belakangan ini terkait gerakan Black Lives Matter, dimana seluruh profit dari penjualan album ini pun akan di donasikan ke komunitas, dan bersamaan dengan ini pun dia juga baru ngerilis buku ‘Assembling a Black Counter Culture.’ 

Album ini bagus dan canggih banget, baik secara lirik, maupun aransemen. Mengutip review dari Bandcamp Daily, “Black Nationalist Sonic Weaponry is such a thoughtfully crafted and theorized piece of work,” and I couldn’t agree more.

Charlotte Cardin – Main Girl EP

Description:

This EP was released in 2017 but only recently, I got around to listening to this Canadian singer’s mesmerizing voice. There’s something in her vocal that reminds me of Duffy/Amy Winehouse. Perhaps the old soul and vibrato with a hint of vulnerability in each song that got me hooked especially in the first 2 songs, “Dirty Dirty” and “Main Girl”. Got me all the feels!
