Jazz Music and Youth

by Muhammad Hilmi

Jazz in Indonesia has become the type of music enjoyed by every social group and has spread almost to every part of Indonesia. Jazz festivals are not only held in the capital, but also remote places far from Jakarta with a very diverse array of venues: campus, traditional markets, villages, mountains, and beaches. Jazz becomes a big thing among young people, both for the audience and players.

How are we to understand this phenomenon? Is there a type of jazz played by young people? Does it offer a new form of aesthetics to the current jazz discourse? Join the discussion with Adib Hidayat, the Indonesian Rolling Stone magazine’s editor in chief and Aldo Sianturi, music business consultant and manager of Believe Digital.
