Keng Sien Exhibition: University of Rest and Relax

by Muhammad Hilmi

This exhibition is our way to reexamine the journey of the life and works of ceramics artist Keng Sien who passed away in March 2014. This exhibition will display his early artworks that appear to have more of baroque and architectural traits and also his works from the last years of his life that eventually come back to simplicity. A simplicity that could only be attained by the excellent mastery of craftsmanship after long exploring, understanding and achieving: a profound wisdom.

Keng Sien studied ceramics at the State Academy of Fine Arts, Leuven, Belgium, 1976-1983. He chose to be outside of the Indonesian mainstream contemporary art scene by continuing his study, dreaming and creating in his studio, dwelling in a long process of curiosity and invention. In his entire life, he was a natural student at the “University of Rest and Relax” until he passed away.

During the exhibition, there will be a number of guided tours for yunior and senior high school students along with an introduction of Keng Sien’s art-making techniques.
