In the Ones Who Are Being Controlled, Otty regards the pose of subjects recorded in those footages as reflection of the camera’s behavior while recording. Otty offers speculation of how the power relations of modernity were working on camera and then ambivalent about the eastern culture. Otty’s paintings and video works are an experimental-anthropological examination analyzing the camera as a machine, the discourse of modernism behind it, public response, as well as the performativity phenomenon which simultaneously surrounds it. Otty’s approach shows an attempt to invent new articulation and alternative mean in the context of criticism, especially of film (archives).
